Name: Stacey Marie Collie Nicknames: I have been Bracey Stacey, Racey Stacey, and Spacey Stacey. (Apparently Stacey is an easy name to rhyme).
How would Rachel describe Stacey? “Stacey is definitely one of the wittiest persons I know and the more you get to know her the funnier and wittier she seems to get! To many, she may initially come off as being a little quieter; however, do not let her calm demeanour fool you… this girl is full of loud laughter, the most hilarious commentary and a zest for life and adventure so big it could literally knock you off your feet. If you do not yet know Stacey, you are definitely going to want to get to know her. Not only is she such a thoughtful friend who would go through extreme measures to meet up with you literally anywhere in the world, she is a girl who is up for just about anything and would be able to convince you to do the most ridiculous things (such as run a marathon in Antarctica ;)). Stacey is so full of love with a spirit that never seems to stop moving and I can’t wait to join her on this epic adventure that lies ahead for us in Antarctica!!”
Tell us about a favourite memory from your time spent at Open Doors. There are just so many to pick from. One fun memory was at the end of my first trip to Nigeria and the school had a big send-forth for me. This was basically just a big good bye party. One of the teachers said she was going to sew a “sexy dress” for me to wear. She took my measurements and it showed up on party day and I wore it with pride. I still have it in my closet today! Students brought in snacks and drinks. The school had a little programs with songs and dances. Parents came to join in the fun too. We finished the send forth off with a big dance party. It was so much fun! During the send-forth there was a moment that was so special to me and almost brought me, the girl who does not cry, to tears. There was a family with that had two little girls at the school who I absolutely adored! I went to there place one day after school and while I was there a rent collector came and they could not afford to pay the $50 for rent. Yet just a month later they showed up at my send forth with a crate of malta (a drink of honour that I could barely stomach on a good day), snacks for everyone and so many gifts for me including some beautiful African fabric. Even though they could not afford to pay their rent, they brought these things because wanted me to feel special and loved. And I did.
What are you most looking forward to about the trip? There is no way I can narrow it down to one thing! There is the race itself, going to Antarctica, the wild life, the icebergs, the adventure of the Drake Passage, the plane food (weird, I know but I love it), spending time with Rach, the money raised for Open Doors, that I will then be able to say I have been to all 7 continents, spending time in Argentina before and after, sleeping in hostels, meeting so many people, crossing Antarctica off my half marathon on every continent list, practising my Spanish, and so much more.
What are you least looking forward to about the trip? The end of last trip I went on involved a lot of boats and waves. Apparently, as I age I am more prone to sea sickness. So that is definitely something I am not looking forward to. But, I am 100% ok with enduring sea sickness for a few days in order to experience the rest of the trip!
How many pairs of active shoes do you own? trail running shoes, road running shoes, gym shoes, cycling shoes, rock climbing shoes, hut booties, downhill ski boots, cross country ski boots, and skates. So if you want to count all of those then 9. That is a lot more than my everyday shoe collection.
What is your biggest fear? Lizards…the smaller the scarier. Geckos are the absolute worst! People always ask “why I am scared of them” or “what are they going to do to you?” My answer is “touch me.” I fully realize this is ridiculous but you can’t help how you feel. Twice in my life it has happened and a lizard touched me. The first was in Gambia. I felt something on my right shin. I slowly pulled my long skirt up and exposed the tail of a 20cm long lizard just chilling on my shin! There was screaming and kicking and that little bugger ran off and up the wall. I can still feel it when I talk about this story and have to reach down to rub my shin to ensure it is not still there. I thought it was the grossest thing that would ever happen to me. Then years later on the Galapagos Islands, a gecko fell from the celling and hit my hand on the way down! If I was standing 10cm in front of where I was it would have landed on my head! Both were horrible experiences that involved a lot of embarrassing girlie screaming. Lizards, not my thing!
What did you want to be when you were small? 5 year old Stacey wanted to be a big truck driver and live in Florida. Currently, I can’t even make the 3 hour drive from Edmonton to Calgary without stopping in Red Deer to get gas or a treat.
What is your go to Karaoke song? If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher.
Tell a silly joke. What did the buffalo say when his son went to college? Biiiiiii-son. haha gets me every time!
Are you reading a book right now and if so which one? The answer to this question should be my textbooks, but does anyone actually read their text books? I have recently pulled ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall off my shelf to reread. It is a real running motivator!
What is one thing you will never do again? After climbing Kilimanjaro I swore I would never do high altitude again. Yet this past spring I found myself once again, hiking at high altitude on my way to Machu Picchu. So even if I say I will never do it again, there is probably a good chance that I will.
What is your favourite food? Peanut Butter!! It is so just so tasty and versatile! You can eat it as a peanut butter cup, a cookie, fudge, ice cream, in sauces, and so much more. You can eat it on toast, a spoon, pancakes, waffles, and a friend has recently taught me to eat it on hamburgers! (Don’t knock it until you try it). I have also just discovered that there is such a thing as peanut butter cup tea!
